Where are your camps?
We meet at Columbus Circle in Central Park and travel to both Riverside and Central Park throughout the week.
What can my child expect during camp?
The Movement Creative focuses on three core principles when designing the programming for our weeks of summer camp.
Physical - Parkour is a discipline of effort rather than physical ability or strength. One of the driving ideas behind our approach to coaching is “Start Together, Finish Together,” which creates a culture of teamwork and collaboration when it comes to learning new skills, conditioning to strengthen our bodies, or even playing a movement game. We also design our classes to provide a challenge to movers of all ages, sizes, and experience levels by scaling difficulty.
Mental - We use the mantra “embrace challenge” to describe our approach to training. We encourage our movers to expand their comfort zones and engage with fear in a healthy way, whether that’s breaking a new jump, trying a new technique, or even moving in a brand new space. Some skills cannot be taught in a lecture, and we believe that risky play, when coached responsibly, is a key component to understanding ones body and forming a healthy relationship to movement.
Social - Developing a bond of trust with the people we train with is one of the best ways for us to stay safe during parkour. To foster skills like altruism and collaboration, we use games and team challenges. Working together in this way also helps reinforce the concept of collective effort rather than competition, and will strengthen communication skills.
What are your camp policies?
To help us keep coaches on staff, we are asking for payment upfront, either in full or on a payment plan. This helps us continue to support our team by offering benefits such as Paid Time Off, Retirement Plans, and Paid Training, and it gives us the funds to build new curriculum.
We will only cancel camp in the event of weather that is dangerous to campers (e.g., severe thunderstorms, flooding). For more information about rainy camp days, please visit this page. For more information about our cancellation policy, please visit this page.
All payments are non-refundable and non-transferrable.
It’s our commitment to make high quality movement education available to anyone, regardless of their financial situation. That’s why we’re proud to continue offering our sliding scale pricing for those in need. Please email us if you would like to apply.
FAQs
What safety measures is The Movement Creative taking?
One of the first things we teach are proper jumping and landing techniques. Whether it's your child's first week or 30th week of camp, we will always start with fundamentals and use progressions to safely teach any jumping/vaulting technique.
What happens on rainy days? Do you cancel camp?
The parkour park at Riverside Park South is our default rainy day location! It is a covered spot so it allows us to train despite the rain. We try our very best to be weatherproof and train in all kinds of weather conditions. However, we will cancel camp if there is a safety concern for our students or our coaches. Coaches will notify parents no later than 8AM the morning of if there is a cancellation, but we may also cancel class early if dangerous weather develops during the day.
Examples of dangerous weather conditions include: Severe thunderstorms, lighting warnings, and flash flood warnings. Since many of our coaches commute to class via public transport or bike, we want to avoid anyone getting stranded after a session ends.
Please make sure your child is prepared for the rain. For some tips on what gear to bring, visit our Rain Day page.
What about water fountain/bathroom breaks?
At least one coach will accompany campers to the water fountains or bathrooms.
What does my child need?
Pack a reusable water bottle and a snack. NO NUTS PLEASE.
On hot days, pack an extra pair of clothes if your child is likely to play in sprinklers during free time.
Bring a backpack that can be worn on 2 shoulders, (no tote, messenger, or roller bags).
You can pack your own sunblock or bug spray, but coaches will always carry this as well.
Please indicate in your profile if your child has any allergies or medical conditions.
Though students sometimes have free time, please do not pack any electronic toys (e.g., video game systems).
All coaches travel with:
Hand sanitizer and antibacterial wipes
Disposable gloves for emergency use (we want to remain as sustainable as possible in our safety efforts)
A first aid kit
A water cooler and an extra water bottle
Sunblock and bug-spray
Refunds & Cancellations
Summer Camp is non-refundable as we commit to paying our coaches once the week has been booked. We can issue a credit towards another service in the event of a cancellation.
Can I book single days/weeks?
In an effort to promote class cohesion and limit disruption, we are no longer offering single day purchases for summer camp.
You are welcome to book a single week or join us all summer long.
How does sliding-scale work?
Sliding-scale works by community support. Participants who can pay full price are financially supporting those who choose to use a discount code.
Sliding-scale is not subsidized by outside organizations, it is made possible by those who choose to pay full price.
To ensure that we can most effectively serve families in financial need, we ask that you apply for sliding scale by emailing us. Aid will be provided on a first-come-first-served basis, so please let us know as soon as possible if you need assistance.
Accessibilty to quality programming is important to us, so we will continue to offer sliding-scale options as long as we can sustainably do so.
“We love parkour with Movement Creative SO much and my 10-year-old son has done it the past three years. The coaches are not just great with the actual instruction but are such incredible people and role models and create such a fun, exploratory, safe, and accepting space!”
Susanna (Parent of 10-year-old)
